AI and automation are accelerating a major workforce transformation in the US, with an estimated 11 million workers needing to transition from declining to growing occupations over the next decade. While the economy could create more jobs overall, many rising roles demand higher and different skills, with only about one in seven workers having a direct pathway that requires little retraining; most will need to develop essential, enabling, and empowering skills to adapt continuously. Barriers such as credential requirements and skill gaps complicate these transitions, making skill development and removing obstacles critical to capturing AI’s economic benefits and ensuring broad labor market mobility.
